Expanding Security to Outdoor Protection
by Scott Simmons, Eastern Regional Manager, Outdoor Solutions, Optex Inc.

Outdoor securityWith security concerns at the highest level they have ever been, more and more commercial customers (and even many residential customers) are interested in expanding their security to include outdoor protection. The “level surveillance” concept allows for the design and integration of security systems that not only detect intruders, but help to prevent intrusion from happening at all. By providing various types of outdoor detection products, you are able to provide a comprehensive package that offers the best detection solutions available for all types of applications.

Level surveillance looks to start at the furthest perimeter, and work its way towards the ultimate protection zone, while offering pre-detection and deterrent capabilities, as well as additional protection along the way. These can be stand-alone detection solutions, which can be monitored directly through an alarm or access control panel, or part of an integrated system incorporating access, CCTV, and/or a variety of other types of enhanced security options, offering greater security and the ability to reduce unwanted alarm responses by providing visual verification.

“Level A” Surveillance

Let’s look at a typical application: a warehouse facility. In this scenario, an ideal solution would be to offer level surveillance – layered detection that would not only protect a breach of the warehouse from occurring, but would also protect other assets which fall in between, such as semi-trucks, spare parts, heavy equipment, etc. Perhaps photo beams (point-to-point infrared detectors) placed around the perimeter would work best as the initial layer (Level A) of protection, detecting intruders who enter a predefined area. Depending on the setup, you may choose to make this initial layer nothing more then a warning zone, with a voice speaker advising the intruder to leave, turning on lights, etc. Or you could make it an active alarm zone, reacting to it the same as you would any other alarm zone.

“Level B” Surveillance

But what about the “smash and grab” scenario, or what if the Level A warnings don’t scare the intruder away? Level B detection could include outdoor volumetric detection, such as stable, dual-detection PIR detectors, which could detect motion within 40 to 100 feet of the warehouse, giving additional response time to an intrusion. In addition, they could be used to protect outdoor storage areas where valuable or hazardous materials are stored.

“Level C” Surveillance

The final layer of detection (Level C), could be limited range PIR detectors or photo beams, designed to detect intrusion within a few feet of the warehouse overhead doors, or other entry areas, or you may find that your interior protection (overhead door contacts, interior motions, etc.) is sufficient as the Level C detection for your application. Either way you have greatly increased the security of your customer’s site and have greatly reduced the chance of an actual loss occurring.

For more information on these and other detection solutions that are available, please contact your local ADI-Burtek distribution professional.

The Wireless Intercom Revolution
by Shary Nassimi, CEO, Universal Wireless Solutions, USA

gate accessHuman forms of communication are unique and probably the most advanced on the planet. People use languages of many forms, with different sounds and tones to communicate with each other their feelings, needs and personal positions. Sometimes however, the ability to communicate face-to-face is not possible. The invention of electricity and shortly thereafter, remote communications, enables the convenience of communicating over virtually unlimited spans, whether within a small environment or across the planet. Now, advances in wire-less voice and data technology are facillitating new applications and solutions for the Security Industry.

Intercoms are designed for reasonably close-distance communications, usually within a dwelling. The technology of voice-over-wire has become indispensable for every aspect and array of market segments, including residential, commercial and military venues.

The intercom technology in use today, however, is not very far from what has been used for decades. Many wireless intercoms, as they’re called, are not truly wire-less! Why are they called wireless then? The answer is that there is some truth in the “wireless” part of the wireless intercoms. They are wireless in the way that they do not require wiring between each other, however, they do require wiring, because they require power as well a medium of transmission. Wireless intercoms achieve both these tasks and needs by utilizing the power connection as the medium of transmission. The user’s voice is Frequency Modulated (FM) onto the power lines. Hence, no wiring between stations, as long as there is power available to both stations. Another requirement is that the lines that the intercoms share must be on the same phase as each other and also be clear of interferences, such as common electrical appliances create. If there is an electric motor, such as a blow dryer, vacuum cleaner or dishwasher operating on the same power lines, the intercom becomes highly unusable and noisy.

There are some companies which have introduced intercoms using FRS or similar technologies. These intercoms overcome the limitations of the traditional wireless intercoms and use radio to communicate with each other; however, again, a limitation presents itself. These devices are power hungry transmitters and receivers, which when used with batteries, can only operate for a few hours. Because of this, a power connection is needed at each intercom location. Additionally, these devices become noisy with similar frequency traffic in the vicinity, and are highly insecure.

A new generation of intercoms has now been introduced, which solves all of the limitations of the preceding products, with no new limitations introduced. This new technology has been implemented in the form of wireless (truly wire-less) intercoms, as well as gate/door access and control and even a first ever line of wireless doorbells and intercom units. All of the new products mentioned operate at long range with years of battery life, and no OFF switch.

As an installer, your limitations of retrofitting using existing cable and wire infrastructure, re-wiring or re-trenching is now eliminated. In new installations, the wiring is completely eliminated, saving at least hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. This means great savings for the customer and more installations for the installer. Furthermore, utilizing the same frequency technology, long-range wireless Wiegand access control and the remote relay command of CCTV are now realities.

Burtek is now a distributor of choice for the new line of Oracle Wireless Intercoms, Security, and Access Control products, designed and manufactured in the USA by Universal Wireless Solutions of Washington. With dozens of patents applied for the
new Oracle product is the leading edge of wireless communications.
