Progressive Technical Standards – Training Courses
by Chris Lea, Digital Product Technician – PTS Instructor, Burtek Systems

crowded-streetRecently there has been a lot of discussion about the incredible growth in the security industry and the rapid changes we have seen in the technologies we use. I don’t see any sign of that change slowing down in the near future. With the costs of ‘going digital’ dropping and more products than ever before being developed to bridge the gap between traditional security and fully IP-based solutions, there is a growing abundance of choice for the dealer and his customers. There is also a growing knowledge base that can be hard to keep up with. As always, Burtek is here with great, informed staff to help you surf the tidal wave of technical detail.

As you may or may not be aware, we have committed to a higher standard of service and support through the Progressive Technical Standards initiative. Since establishing our commitment to PTS, we have seen a great deal of interest and success in our introductory course: Networking Basics and DVR Selection. As a first step into the digital world, this course provides a solid grounding in Internet theory as it applies to the Security Industry. It also details how to choose and care for digital recorders. This course was designed around the sort of questions and obstacles encountered by installers every day. We have taken care to keep the class as broadly based as possible to ensure the knowledge gained is applicable in any environment. The feedback I’ve personally received on this has been universally appreciative, and we intend to continue this style of teaching in future courses.

Soon we will be rolling out the next course that addresses the convergence of IP and security. This course will step beyond simple connections between the DVR and the Internet to discuss what we will be facing in the coming days of fully digital security systems. Among the topics we will be discussing are: the pros and cons of IP cameras, network servers vs. traditional analog systems, how to spec the equipment, and what to ask the customer and his IT staff to ensure the system is designed right. Again, we are anticipating the questions you will have because we have been facing the same questions ourselves, and we are dedicated to making your technical transitions as smooth
as possible.

We also understand, in this time of tight competition in the job market (and not enough hours in the day to train people), that a business has to have more to offer both customers and prospective staff. To that end, we intend to design and offer a basic CCTV course for those new to the industry or branching out from other areas. Check back with us in later issues on our progress, and if you have any ideas for classes you would like to see let one of our staff know, or email us at ptso@burtek.com.

PTS Certification gains you recognition as someone fully trained on the installation, configuration and operation of the core product(s) discussed in these courses. You will benefit by having well-trained and certified staff you trust in the field and your customers will benefit by having equipment properly installed by skilled and confident tradesmen. Courses are offered on a regular basis in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal (English only) and this Spring will be offered throughout the US. Join us, and stay ahead of the curve.

IP Video: Tomorrow is Here
by Ted Koch, President, Security Innovations Technology Corp. – Canadian Agents for ACTi Corp.

video over IPFor the last several years, we have all heard that IP video was coming. I’m pleased to announce that it is here—and has been for quite a while! This seemingly rapid shift in technology is not as dramatic as one might imagine. The process has been more of an evolution than a revolution.

How did we get here and where are we going? Analog video products that have stood alone for many years developed into components of the network with the introduction of the first network card into a DVR. With the addition of that network connection, the dynamics of security video changed. Video grew rapidly in popularity and expanded on the network. With this growth, limitations of traditional analog video and the resultant impact on the network became more evident.

In the earlier years, analog video had grown primarily as a closed circuit security system (CCTV). Stand-alone proprietary systems were developed without the need to address issues of universal cabling, global accessibility, video quality, network protocols and the new varieties of applications. As opportunities and concerns started to arise in facilities, difficult questions were posed by the “New Video Gate Keepers”, the CIO’s, CTO’s, Directors of IT and IT Administrators.

The growth in IP video products is driven by the need to address all these important issues. Early IP video held great promise but was initially limited by its inability to provide acceptable security products and its poorly perceived video quality. Standard security features such as vandal-proof housings, day and night capabilities, true speed dome functionality, etc., were secondary matters. Earlier IP products concentrated on network functionality, bandwidth and video storage/management.

Today, IP video products tackle those issues related to the security professional while adapting to the new reality of video on a network. Products that are available in the market today include: vandal-proof IP fixed-dome cameras with day and night functionality, PoE (Power over Ethernet) and heater; IP PTZs with 22X optical zoom, day and night function, wide dynamic range in an IP66 housing with heater and blower and two-way audio and IR bullet cameras with varifocal lens, motion detection and audio.

The video quality of IP products continues to push the boundaries which are no longer limited by the NTSC analog standard of 640 x 480 resolution. IP video sees D1 resolution (720 x 480) as common. With the developing Megapixel IP camera technology having a 1280 x 1024 (plus) resolution 13 times the resolution of CIF 352 x 240, security video quality is moving towards a new “Renaissance” phase. Now, affordable quality recorded video will be available to every customer.

Working hand-in-hand with resolution are the improvements in network-friendly compression technologies like MPEG-4 and H.264. These improvements allow for higher quality video to be viewed while reducing the overall impact on network capabilities. These enhanced compressions facilitate longer recording times and require smaller storage mediums. Improved compression effects frame rates on the most basic network by allowing high quality video (720 x 480 resolution) at 30 FPS while producing a bit rate of 1.5 Mbps or less per IP addressable product.

ACTi diagram

The amount of cameras needed for an application is positively effected by IP video solutions. Applications are no longer limited by the number of BNCs in your DVR since IP video solutions allow the requirements of the applications to determine the correct camera coverage. The cost of entry into the IP video market is marginal. Some IP video product manufacturers offer free recording software for up to 16 channels. These complimentary software packages allow for easy seeding opportunities and allows the consumer to perform “real life” demonstrations.

There are also opportunities within legacy video systems. Previously installed analog video systems may now be considered for upgrading to IP. Today there are solutions available to utilize existing analog cameras and the ultimate conversion to IP. Some video servers can convert up to eight analog cameras at a time to eight independent IP channels with eight isolated video inputs. These video servers also include two-way audio per channel and
are delivered to the customer at very competitive prices.

IP video also allows for greater marketing opportunities. A question asked by a customer could be, “If no crime ever happens in my building, am I getting all I can from my security video system?” With the deployment of an IP solution, an integrators response may be: “Did you know that security IP video cameras are being used by maintenance departments to see if and when driveways are being plowed? Could your marketing department use the showroom cameras to add video to your website? Can you lease vendors time to review their in-store displays in your facility?” This kind of open discussion reaffirms the flexibility offered by an IP video system.

How are IP video products effecting world markets today?

The world video market trends indicate that, by the end of 2007, 22%* of all video cameras sold (including video servers) will be IP. That number grows to 32% in 2008*, and 48% in 2009*. By 2010, (only three years from now), IP video surpasses analog in market position. This IP video growth occurs at the same time that the world video market will double in size from 2004 to 2010*.

Where is IP video going?

For many years, video has mainly been deployed as a deterrent and/or forensic tool which was often the consequence of a reactionary response. Developing video analytics offers countless possibilities within the IP video system. Counting the number of people entering a door, determining the direction of people walking or running, evaluating how long a package has been left in an area illustrates a few of the numerous proactive capabilities of an IP system. All these functions will be hosted in the IP video camera or server, at the edge of your system, further reducing network traffic.

These changes in our video business were not driven by the manufacturers but by the evolving video consumer. IP video will not initially replace all analog applications but will clearly expand upon the existing opportunities within the video industry!
